Chemical composition (typical values)

• C (Carbon): 0.85 – 0.95 %

• W (Tungsten): 5.5 – 6.7 %

• Mo (Molybdenum): 4.5 – 5.5 %

• Cr (Chromium): 3.8 – 4.5 %

• V (Vanadium): 1.7 – 2.1 %

• Si (Silicon): max. 0.45 %

• Mn (Manganese): max. 0.40 %

• P, S (Phosphorus, Sulphur): max. 0.03 %

Properties

• High speed tool steel with very high wear resistance.

• Good toughness and compressive strength.

• High hardness after hardening – approx. 62–66 HRC.

• Resistant to softening at elevated temperatures (red hardness).

• Good machinability in the annealed condition.

Heat treatment

• Soft annealing: 820 – 880 °C, slow cooling in the furnace; max. hardness 255 HB.

• Hardening:

  • Preheating at 450 °C -> 850 °C.

  • Austenitizing temperature: 1180 – 1230 °C.

  • Quenching in oil or air.

• Tempering: 3× at 560 °C; final hardness 62–66 HRC.

Applications

• Production of drills, milling cutters, taps, reamers, cutting knives.

• Forming tools exposed to high wear.

• Cutting tools for machining steels and cast irons at high cutting speeds.
