Basic Characteristics
Designation: Toolox 33
Manufacturer: SSAB (Sweden)
Steel type: Pre-hardened tool steel / engineering steel
Hardness (as delivered): approx. 300 HB (32–35 HRC)
Tensile strength: approx. 1100 MPa
Delivery condition: quenched and tempered
Properties
Excellent dimensional stability after machining and thermal stress
High toughness even in large cross-sections
Good machinability due to homogeneous microstructure
Can be nitrided and surface-hardened
Low internal stresses – ideal for precision molds and tool holders
Suitable for polishing and etching of surfaces
Typical Applications
Plastic molds (especially where hardness requirements are moderate)
Mold and die holders
Structural parts subjected to dynamic loads
Carriers, frame components, mounting plates
Fixtures and clamping devices

Heat Treatment
Toolox 33 is supplied in a pre-hardened condition and does not require further heat treatment.
It may be slightly tempered (up to 550 °C) for stress relief or nitrided to increase surface hardness.
Machinability and Welding
Good machinability (better than conventional hardened tool steels)
Weldable, but preheating to 200–250 °C and slow cooling are recommended
Use low-hydrogen electrodes for best results
