 Chemical composition (typical values)

• C (carbon): 0.08 – 0.13 %

• Mn (manganese): 1.00 – 1.50 %

• S (sulfur): 0.27 – 0.33 %

• Pb (lead): 0.20 – 0.35 %

• P (phosphorus): max. 0.11 %

• Si (silicon): max. 0.10 %

 Properties

• Excellent machinability (especially on automatic lathes, CNC).

• Low toughness and strength – unsuitable for dynamically stressed parts.

• Limited weldability – Pb and S reduce weldability.

• Cannot be significantly hardened by quenching.

• Tensile strength: approx. 490 – 640 MPa (depending on delivery condition).

 Heat treatment

• Usually delivered in rolled or drawn condition (without further heat treatment).

• Annealing is only used in special cases, not for hardening.

 Applications

• Automatic production: screws, nuts, pins, studs, small shafts.

• Mass production of parts where speed and cost efficiency of machining are decisive.
