Material designation

• C45 = non-alloy quality steel according to EN 10083-2

• ČSN/STN: 12050

• Carbon content approx. 0.42 – 0.50 % -> medium carbon steel suitable for quenching and tempering

• C: 0.42 – 0.50 %

• Mn: 0.50 – 0.80 %

• Si: 0.10 – 0.40 %

• P: <= 0.035 %

• S: <= 0.035 %

Mechanical properties (in +C condition, cold drawn)

• Tensile strength Rm: approx. 600 – 800 MPa

• Yield strength Re: approx. 350 – 600 MPa (depending on dimension)

• Hardness: approx. 180 – 220 HB (before heat treatment)

Delivery condition +C

• +C = cold drawn, hard, not heat treated

• After the final cold forming, the steel undergoes light cold drawing, which provides:

  • high dimensional accuracy

  • smooth surface finish

  • increased strength due to strain hardening

  • slightly reduced toughness compared to annealed conditions

Applications

• Components with higher strength requirements, often intended for further heat treatment (quenching and tempering),

• Shafts, pins, gears, bolts, pistons, fasteners,

• Good machinability; after quenching, it offers good wear resistance.
