Typical applications
Shear blades and cutting edges, punches, blanking/piercing tools
Measuring and clamping fixtures, mandrels, guide pins, smaller dies/tools for cold-work applications
Typical chemical composition (wt.%)
(ranges may vary slightly depending on the producer/standard)
C: 1.10 – 1.25
Si: 0.15 – 0.30
Mn: 0.20 – 0.40
Cr: 0.50 – 0.80
V: 0.07 – 0.12
P, S: max. approx. 0.03 / 0.03
Usually supplied soft annealed, typical hardness max. ~220 HB.
Approx. 710 – 740/750 °C, holding time 2–5 h, slow furnace cooling (controlled) → max. ~220 HB.
Approx. 600 – 650 °C, then cooling (typically in furnace / in air depending on the process).
Austenitizing approx. 780 – 840 °C, followed by quenching in oil or water.
Achievable hardness after hardening is typically ~64 – 66 HRC.
Typically 100 – 400 °C (depending on the required hardness/toughness).
Indicative values (hardness after hardening + tempering):
200 °C: >62 HRC
300 °C: ~60 HRC
400 °C: ~54 HRC
500 °C: ~46 HRC
