Toolox 44

| Delivery condition | Description | Typical hardness |
|---|---|---|
| +QT | Quenched and tempered – steel is supplied directly from SSAB in a pre-hardened condition, ready for machining | approx. 45 HRC (≈ 450 HB) |
| +N, optional | Nitrided – for increased surface hardness and wear resistance | Surface hardness up to 1000 HV |
⚙️ Material designation
Trade name: TOOLOX 44
Manufacturer: SSAB (Sweden)
Material designation EN / DIN: — not assigned, patented branded steel
Steel type: Pre-hardened tool steel for moulds and structural components
Equivalent: approx. 1.2344 / H13, for reference only based on properties
Delivery condition: +QT, quenched and tempered
Hardness in delivery condition: approx. 45 HRC (≈ 450 HB)
🔩 Properties
High strength and hardness already in the delivery condition
Excellent toughness – resistant to impact and dynamic stress
Very good dimensional stability during machining and thermal stress
Good machinability for steel of this strength class
Suitable for nitriding or surface hardening
Suitable for polishing, etching and laser texturing of the surface
Low internal stresses – suitable for precision parts and moulds
🧰 Applications
Moulds and base plates for plastic injection moulding and aluminium die casting
Mould holders and press tool holders
Frames, beams and fixtures exposed to high loads
High-strength structural components and clamping devices
Tool components requiring a combination of strength, toughness and stability

🔥 Typical heat treatment
Toolox 44 is not further heat-treated, as it is supplied in a pre-hardened condition.
However, it can be slightly tempered up to max. 550 °C for stabilization or nitrided to increase surface hardness.
Machinability and welding
Good machinability considering its high strength.
Welding is possible with preheating to 250–300 °C and slow cooling.
Low-hydrogen filler materials should be used.
After welding, stress relief heat treatment at approx. 550 °C is recommended.
