🔩 Properties
Steel 1.6582 belongs to the highest-strength quenching and tempering steels and is intended for extremely highly stressed components. It combines high strength, toughness and excellent hardenability, even in large diameters.
High strength after quenching and tempering, 1100–1400 MPa
Excellent toughness and impact resistance
Outstanding hardenability, transforms to martensite even in massive cross-sections
Excellent fatigue strength, suitable for rotating and cyclically loaded components
Good machinability in +A, annealed condition
Good weldability, with preheating
Stable structure after tempering
Wear resistance
Long service life even under extreme conditions
Typical mechanical values:
Hardness in +A condition: max. 248 HB
Hardness after +QT: approx. 30–45 HRC
Yield strength Re: 900–1200 MPa
Tensile strength Rm: 1100–1400 MPa
🧰 Applications
Steel 1.6582 is used wherever extreme requirements for strength, toughness and fatigue resistance are needed, especially in heavy engineering, mining, transport, energy and aerospace industries.
Typical applications:
Shafts and pins for highly stressed mechanisms
Gears, pinions and transmission shafts
Rotating components and rotors
Axles and spindles
Flywheels and clutch components
Hydraulic and pressure components
High-strength bolts, studs and pins
Components for mining, extraction and construction machinery
Aerospace and energy engineering components
Highly stressed structural parts exposed to impact and vibration
⚗️ Chemical composition
| Element | Content (%) |
|---|---|
| C, carbon | 0.30–0.38 |
| Si, silicon | 0.10–0.40 |
| Mn, manganese | 0.50–0.80 |
| P, phosphorus | ≤ 0.025 |
| S, sulphur | ≤ 0.035 |
| Cr, chromium | 1.30–1.70 |
| Ni, nickel | 1.30–1.70 |
| Mo, molybdenum | 0.15–0.30 |
🔥 1️⃣ Hardening
Austenitizing temperature: 830–860 °C
Holding time: depending on thickness, approx. 1 min/mm
Cooling: oil or polymer
Resulting structure: martensite, very hard
Steel 1.6582 hardens well even in larger diameters, thanks to Cr + Ni + Mo.
🔥 2️⃣ High tempering – quenching and tempering
Tempering must follow immediately after hardening.
Tempering temperature: 540–680 °C
Duration: 2–4 hours
Atmosphere: air / furnace
Typical results:
| Tempering temperature | Hardness | Tensile strength Rm |
|---|---|---|
| 540 °C | 42–45 HRC | ~1400 MPa |
| 580 °C | 38–42 HRC | ~1300 MPa |
| 620 °C | 32–36 HRC | ~1150 MPa |
| 650 °C | 28–32 HRC | ~1000 MPa |
🔥 3️⃣ Soft annealing, +A
Temperature: 650–700 °C
Cooling: very slow, furnace / air
Hardness: max. 248 HB
Used before machining and as delivery condition.
🔥 4️⃣ Normalizing, +N
Temperature: 850–880 °C
Cooling: air
Result: fine-grained, homogeneous structure.
🔥 5️⃣ Stress relieving, +SR
Temperature: 530–650 °C
Used after rough machining or before grinding.
🔥 6️⃣ Nitriding, optional
Steel 1.6582 is also suitable for nitriding:
Temperature: 500–530 °C
Surface hardness: 800–1000 HV
Advantage: hard surface, tough core → extremely long service life of the component.
