Type: Hot-work tool steel
Properties and Applications
🧩 Properties and Applications
Properties
- Excellent hot strength and tempering resistance
- Very good toughness even at elevated temperatures
- High resistance to thermal fatigue and thermal shock
- Good wear resistance
- Good thermal conductivity
- High resistance to softening at high temperatures
- Good polishability and nitriding capability
Applications
- Die casting moulds (aluminium, zinc, magnesium)
- Hot-work tools (forging, extrusion, pressing)
- Plastic injection moulds
- Dies, punches and cores
- Hot shear blades and cutting tools
- Extrusion dies and tooling components
⚙️ Application Characteristics
This steel is designed for demanding high-temperature applications where a combination of toughness, hot strength and resistance to thermal fatigue is required.
It is particularly suitable for tools exposed to cyclic thermal loads and high mechanical stress.
Thanks to its Cr, Mo and V alloying elements, it offers excellent resistance to cracking, deformation and wear even during long-term operation.

Heat treatment
🔧 Heat Treatment of Steel 1.2344
| Process | Temperature | Medium / Time | Result / Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soft annealing | 800–850 °C | Slow furnace cooling, 10–20 °C/h | Hardness approx. 200 HB, improved machinability |
| Preheating | 450 °C → 850 °C | Gradual heating before hardening | Reduction of thermal shock |
| Hardening | 1020–1050 °C | Air / Oil / Salt bath, 500–550 °C | Hardness approx. 52–54 HRC |
| Tempering | 520–650 °C | 2× to 3× for 2 h | Hardness 44–52 HRC depending on temperature |
| Nitriding | 500–550 °C | Depending on required layer depth | Layer up to 1000 HV, higher wear resistance |
