Properties and Applications
⚙️ Properties
- Supplied in the pre-hardened condition (QT) with a hardness of approx. 280–325 HB (30–34 HRC).
- Excellent corrosion resistance, even in contact with aggressive plastics and cooling water.
- Good polishability – suitable for optical molds.
- Stable structure and good machinability in the QT condition.
- Can be nitrided to increase surface hardness.
🧰 Applications
- Steel with high corrosion resistance and excellent polishability.
- Stable during heat treatment – minimal distortion.
- Suitable for mirror-polished surfaces and molds operating in aggressive or humid environments.
- Can be machined by EDM (electrical discharge machining) without significant reduction in corrosion resistance.
Chemical Composition
🧪 Chemical Composition
- C (Carbon): 0.33 – 0.45%
- Cr (Chromium): 15.5 – 17.0%
- Mo (Molybdenum): 1.0 – 1.3%
- Mn: max. 1.00%
- Si: max. 1.00%
- P: max. 0.030%
- S: max. 0.030%
Heat Treatment
🔥 Heat Treatment
(Usually not carried out, as the steel is already supplied in the QT condition.)
- Soft annealing: 750–800 °C, slow cooling.
- Hardening: 1000–1040 °C, quenching in oil or in air.
- Tempering: 200–300 °C (to the required hardness, usually 50–54 HRC in case of additional treatment).
